Edmund Leach, “Michelangelo’s Genesis: A Structuralist Interpretation of the Central Panels of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistine_Chapel_ceiling

Leach’s main hypothesis is that the Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings by Michelangelo contain references to both Old and New Testaments, depending on the order in which they are read. He looks at the panels as a whole and then analyzes them by a logical order that he presents as a structuralist interpretation. He strengthens his argument by analyzing different depictions of people as representative of one person, such as the Virgin Mary being depicted as Judith, Eve and others.
